The Sea Red Cross station of Arriluze is located in Algorta, Getxo, one of the coastal towns bordering the port of Bilbao.

Being the capital city of Bizkaia, the western province of the Basque Country, Bilbao has appeared from its beginings as one of the most important and frequented comercial ports of Europe.

The deep-rooted tradition of sailing between the basques has taken them to the most remote lands all through the history, leaving more or less discrete records on place names and nautical charts, but also in the form of international treaties and commercial documents.
 

For instance, it is remarcable the fact that the whole sea surface between the west coast of France and the north of Spain has been named Bay of Biscay, as a tribute to those who always considered it as their home.

Their expeditions took the basques to far places such us Newfoundland or Saint Pierre et Miquelon, and their skills on sailorship allowed one of them, Juan Sebastian Elkano, to be the first man to surround the earth.

Apart from the facilities of the comercial harbour of Bilbao, its outer docks also protect two marinas and three coastal-fishing ports located inside of the bay: Getxo Kaia and the Real Club Marítimo del Abra and Zierbena, Santurtzi and Arriluze respectively.
